NEC Versa UltraLite - Extensive Review

Date: Tuesday September 04, 2001
Category: Notebooks Author: M. Page
Manufacture: NEC

The NEC Versa UltraLite is positively sleek, and amazingly slim, measuring in at a mere 1.06" thick

Benchmarks: Productivity

WinBench 99 is a subsystem-level benchmark that measures the performance of a PC's graphics, disk, and video subsystems in a Windows environment. The benchmark consists of four tests; Business Disk, High end Disk, Business Graphics and High end Graphics. We put each of the notebooks through the same series of tests while in mobile mode.

WinBench 99 Ver1.2 - Tested on DC power (Battery)

WinBench99 1.2 - Battery Tests
Notebook Business Desk High-end Disk Business Graphics High-end Graphics
NEC Versa UltraLite 1590 6370 42.1 224
ACER Travelmate 739TLV 2020 7400 53.8 340

In each of the WinBench99 benchmarks the 3.3lb NEC UltraLite came in below that of the 7lb Acer 739TLV. It is important to note that while the Acer system was effectively running at 700MHz, the difference in benchmarks scores is being used to illustrate the relative performance capabilities of the NEC subnotebook against a typical full-size notebook.

Content Creation Winstone 2001

Content Creation Winstone 2001 benchmarks a system by running multiple windows-based applications as a regular user might. While there are six applications which form the basis of this benchmark, the entire session is a single test, returning a single result. Content Creation runs Adobe Photoshop 5.5, Adobe Premiere 5.1, Macromedia Director 8.0, Macromedia Dreamweaver 3.0, Netscape Navigator 4.73 and Sonic Foundry Sound Forge 4.5 through a series of scripted activities that make the computer actually work.

Notebook Content Creation Test1 Test2
NEC Versa UltraLite 15 15.4 15
Acer Travelmate 739 TLV 26.9 24.2 26.9

The interesting point to take note of with this series of Content Creation benchmarks is that results for the NEC UltraLite go down slightly. The Acer notebook on the other hand exhibits a slightly better run at the benchmark the second time around.

Business Winstone 2001

Business Winstone 2001 as a system-level, application-based benchmark that measures a PC's overall performance when running Norton Antivirus 2000, WinZip 7.0, Microsoft FrontPage 2000, Lotus Notes R5, Microsoft Access 2000, Microsoft Excel 2000, Microsoft PowerPoint 2000, Microsoft Project 98, Microsoft Word 2000, and Netscape Communicator 4.73. Business Winstone runs real applications through a series of scripted activities and uses the time the computer takes to complete those activities to produce its performance scores.

NEC Versa UltraLite 10.3
Acer Travelmate 739 TLV 20.9

In this set of benchmarks that run day to day business applications in a timed fashion, the NEC UltraLite comes in only slightly above that of the base machine used as the reference point for the benchmarks themselves.
