Sewoo I&T's Crusoe WebPads

Sewoo I&T are a South Korean company founded in 1996. With a background in product development and industrial data access points, the move towards portable web computing is a natural one. Recently, during an event held by Transmeta we were able to take a quick look at a previously unknown device using a 400Mhz Crusoe processor. The small webpad is multi-operating system capable, running Mobile Linux, Windows CE, or Windows 98/2000. Battery life is reported to be between 6 to 8 hours.

The Sewoo SMP-3000 as it is formally known, has three USB ports, and optional CMOS digital Camera, an InfraRed port, Type II PCMCIA port, and an 8.4" TFT LCD touch screen. The unit we saw was in its most basic configuration, but accessories like wireless LAN cards, and USB-enabled FDD, K/B, CDROM, Mouse, etc.. can be attached. Odly it was one of the few products we saw at Comdex which didn't have "BlueTooth Inside."

Controls are positioned along the margins of the screen, and along with the touch screen capabilities, a stylus pen comes standard to compliment a handwriting recognition application. A 6.0GB hard drive, 64MB of RAM and an embedded microphone provide the necessary ingredients for an experience beyond the boundaries of the limiting "surf n' email only" webpads. No information was available concerning what impact the camera has on overall battery life of the unit. From what we hear from Sony, who also have a camera capable of still or full-motion video capture embedded in their VAIO C1VN, the camera tends put quite a strain on battery longevity. The SMP-3000 weighs in at a rather light 1.2Kg, price has not be decided.
