ProGear WebPad Specs
Remember way back in the spring when we had pictures of S3's "DayTripper" WebPad? Well S3 have finally brought this
prototype, based on the TM3200/TM3400 400Mhz Crusoe processor to the market, the
"vertical market" that is. Under the new name of "ProGear" and via a new subsidiary called
FrontPath. FrontPath were created September 20th to develop and market internet appliances autonomously
from S3. The ProGear is the first addition, and will not be available to
consumers directly, but rather through companies who
provide internet services for other companies. Sound confusing? Essentially, this
current model will be made available through a company called CyberPIXIE which
markets the device to hotels or cruise ships. Internet access
is delivered via wireless connections. FrontPath have alluded to the ProGear eventually
being available to the general consumer, but that may be a year
or more down the
line.
The specs for the ProGear show among other things, that the device runs Linux
2.4x kernal, emphasizing the continued delays with the MobileLinux
platform. Expected price is $1500 for standard device with 3 hour battery
life.
